pingrobot

Domain expiry checker

Find out when a domain's registration runs out, from the registry's own record.

Auto-renew fails more often than people think: an expired card, a registrar account under an old email, a transfer that never finished. Add a monitor and turn on domain reminders, and PingRobot emails you weeks before the date.

What happens after a domain expires

StageWhat it means
Expiry dateThe paid registration period ends. Many registrars park the domain or stop resolving it right away, so the site and email go offline.
Grace periodFor most generic TLDs, roughly 30–45 days in which the owner can still renew, usually at the normal price.
Redemption periodAbout 30 more days in which the domain can be restored, typically for an extra fee.
Pending deleteA few days after which the name is released and anyone can register it, including people who buy expired domains for their traffic.

Exact periods depend on the TLD and the registrar, so check your registrar's terms for your domain.

RDAP and WHOIS

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the structured, JSON-based successor to WHOIS. ICANN made RDAP the official source for generic TLDs, so dates come in one standard format instead of a different text layout for every registry. Personal contact details are usually redacted in both.

Keep a domain from expiring

  • Turn on auto-renew and check that the card on file hasn't expired.
  • Make sure the registrar account email is one you still read: renewal notices go there.
  • Renew important domains for several years at a time.
  • Set an independent reminder, in case the registrar's emails land in spam.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the expiry date come from?

From RDAP, the registration data service that replaced WHOIS for generic TLDs. We ask the registry that runs the domain's TLD and show its expiration date as it is recorded today.

Why is there no date for my domain?

Some country-code registries don't offer RDAP or don't publish expiry dates (for example .com.tr and .de). Check with your registrar instead.

What happens when a domain expires?

The website and email on it stop working, usually within days. Most registries then give a grace period to renew at the normal price, followed by a redemption period with a fee, before the name is released for anyone to register.

Can PingRobot remind me before my domain expires?

Yes. Turn on domain expiry reminders on any website, API, port or DNS monitor, and we check the registry daily and email you 7, 14, 30 or 60 days before the date. It's included on the Free plan.
